Crop zoom only uses the center portion of the sensor to achieve higher magnification at a cost of resolution. This is not even remotely similar to how optical zoom works, which involves the change in physical focal length. The word 'optical' is used by Apple to blur the line and have people believe that there is no image quality loss even though there is one. Following your logic, Nokia 808 had 3.5 times 'optical quality' zoom because it shot 3MP photos by default on a 38MP sensor? NO! There are plenty of cases where smartphone makers false advertised features before. Some phones are advertised to have 48MP even though it is impossible to shoot in that resolution no matter how deep you go into the settings. Apple's ProRaw is not raw because it is not a raw data straight out of the sensor, and has been demosaicked, sharpened and noise-reduced. The moon mode on Huawei and Samsung phones overlap a sample image of the moon on top of the captured image to create a better photo, and it did this without telling the users about it. They never faced a class action lawsuit despite all of these deranged practices, never got punished, ever.

You are confusing 'digital zoom' and what Apple is doing. What Apple is doing is equivalent to what Sony does on their Alphas with the APS-C/Super 35mm Mode. It's a full-resolution crop, which virtually all phones do to one extent or other, and it's the norm if you shoot at 16x9. There is no practical visual difference, which is why the term 'optical quality is perfectly descriptive of the mode. Again, 'optical quality' means exactly what it says. If you disagree, file a class-action suit and make some money if you are right.

Anonymous, 13 Sep 2022"2x optical-quality telephoto" means exactly that: quality equivalent to 2x telephot... more By the way, no digital zoom is lossless, because by doing so you are effectively using less sensor area hence getting more noise. I saw some people on gsmarena incorrectly using this term to describe 2x crop from a quad pixel sensor. Instead it should be called, a crop zoom that does not cause the loss of resolution, or something. You are not losing a resolution, but you are losing data, after all.

Anonymous, 13 Sep 2022"2x optical-quality telephoto" means exactly that: quality equivalent to 2x telephot... more To be fair, Apple should not be using the term 'optical' to describe any sort of zoom that happens on iphone. Optical zoom requires a complex lens design that physically moves to change its focal length. If you are cropping the center of the sensor then there is nothing optical about it as no lens element is moving to achieve the change in field of view. The same applies for the 2x telephoto, as a 'telephoto' is a term standing for a lens that has a longer physical focal length than the standard lens. Android manufacturers do not call digital zoom a telephoto because that is just not what it is. I can see what the user you are responding to is trying to say. Apple's infographics in this article infers the main camera has two different native full frame equivalent field of view, 24mm and 48mm, even though that is not true. Frankly speaking, descriptions written by Apple regarding this digital zoom are confusing at best. Apple uses contradicting terms alternatingly to have people let normies think that they will get something they will not have, and although photographers and enthusiasts can see through tactics of Apple, most people cannot.

It's what the article says, it's what Apple says. The fact that you have trouble figuring out how it's different than saying "2x optical telephoto" is a shortcoming of your own, not of the article.

Have we talked about the iphone 15 yet? I'm so over the 14 series already..... Bring on Dynamic Island 2 where it is decreased by 5%. Take my money Apple!

Anonymous, 12 Sep 2022 thanks a lot for warning us, now go to buy some chinese "flagshipkiller" meh, sorry to disappoint you apple fanboy, but I don't buy chinese. The "dynamic island" is simply bullshit

Baldilocks73, 12 Sep 2022 No sales tax at all in my State. and what State that would be??

I don't have any "trouble" understanding the information presented in this article, nor how this digital crop zoom actually works. Also, Apple doesn't use the term "lossless", "crop" nor "digital" zoom - they just straight up call it "2x optical-quality telephoto". I can recognise the discrepancy between what it is and how Apple presents it, hence criticising Apple's deceptive advertisement (full of ambiguous terms and explanations) which does not accurately reflect what is happening behind the scene and was clearly made to mislead average consumers.

Lossles... more This conversation ia going nowhere. - You are assuming Nick does not understand how it works, - Meanwhile Nick does understand how it works but he is claiming Apple's explanation for the feature is unfaithful. It does not matter whether gsmarena explains the feature correctly or not, Nick is criticizing Apple for using borderline false advertisement.

Baldilocks73, 12 Sep 2022 No sales tax at all in my State. Exactly where?

Not a fan of the eSIM only option for iPhone 14 series because I have multiple phones I currently swap my physical SIM between at my leisure 🙃

Lossless is lossless. The data is preserved by the sensor and there should not be any material perceptual difference between a 2x lens 12.5mp image and a lossless crop from 48mp to a 12.5mp image. If anything, the cheap 2x lenses used on most phones would introduce bigger issues. You cr@p on every Apple thread, and in this case, it makes no sense.

NoBot, 12 Sep 2022I know it's not APPLE's fault, but in the current currency-/inflation scenario germa... more It's not just currency, it's the crazy 20% VAT in the EU. Its US equivalent, the state sales tax tops out at 10% and it's way lower in many states. It is always charged on top of the listed price, so consumers are acutely aware of it when they go and vote in the next elections. Politicians love hidden taxes and the VAT is essentially such a tax.

Especially in other parts than US/Canada/China. In many online shops people can still grab an iPhone 13 Pro Max. Which is almost the same price as the iPhone 14 Plus (even better price in some cases). So, is easy to imagine that, those people who Apple thought they will go with a larger iPhone, they will just go with the iPhone 13 Pro Max (at similar price). And for the rest, they will simply not buy an overpriced iPhone. For now, it looks like Apple's gamble on a bigger iPhone model didn't pay off. Or maybe people were expecting lower price for it.
