ZEISS launches ClearView Finished Single Vision lenses - Insight

ZEISS is “raising the standard of stock lenses” with the launch of its ClearView Finished Single Vision (FSV) lenses, which it says brings many aspects of freeform lens design to the FSV lens category.

According to the company, single vision is the most sold ophthalmic lens design, with the vast majority of these lenses being FSV lenses. However, it says many FSV lenses perform poorly with respect to their peripheral optics due to the lens design itself.

“The central power of a lens can be produced by an almost infinite range of lens forms. Lens design choices not only make a big difference in what lens aesthetics and wearing comfort can be achieved, but have a significant impact on its optical performance, particularly in the lens periphery,” ZEISS stated.

“Better optical performance across the entire lens can only be achieved by applying a higher complexity to the lens design optimisation.”

When ZEISS pioneered freeform technology for ophthalmic lenses, freeform single vision Rx lenses could overcome these problems, using more complex shapes, the company stated.

Freeform technology meant the lens shape could be optimised to give the best optics for each individual prescription while delivering very flat and thin lenses. According to ZEISS, this resulted in a new class of single vision lenses.

Recently, ZEISS said it decided to re-examine industry practices in single vision, challenging why the majority of single vision wearers – those wearing FSV lenses – could not get the visual benefits of freeform lens design.

“ZEISS has now identified a way to get these complex freeform lens designs onto FSV lenses. The advanced freeform lens design in ZEISS ClearView FSV uses point-by-point optimisation of the lens surface,” the company said.

“The lens power is optimised using 700 free parameters across one entire quadrant of the lens, which is then mirrored two times to cover the entire lens surface. The result is a FSV lens design that is both very thin and flat, and achieves excellent optics – with clear viewing from the lens centre to the periphery. A game-changer for optics.”

ZEISS products and training manager Ms Elmarie Pretorius said the company was transforming the single vision market by bringing many aspects of freeform lens design to the FSV lens category.

“Freeform lens design combined with the ClearForm technology used in ZEISS ClearView FSV enables complex lens shapes that were previously only possible in surfaced single vision lenses,” she said.

“ZEISS now offers premium quality optics in finished single vision lenses, combined with fast delivery and affordable pricing to ensure everyone can access the benefits of ZEISS optics.”
